Quakers split with Muskingum

Team wins 4-0 before falling 8-6

(WC Press Release) WILMINGTON, Ohio (April 21, 2004) -- The Wilmington College Quaker baseball team split a double header with Muskingum College on Tuesday, winning 4-0 before falling 8-6.

In the first game, the 4-0 win, the team used a pair of two-run home runs, off of the bats of Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) and Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) giving the team a 4-0 lead after the third inning. The rest of the game remained scoreless, as the Quakers picked up the win. Closer Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn) started his first game of the season, pitching six and two-thirds of an inning, striking out five and walking just one.

In the second game, the Muskies jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, before the Quakers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to five. Muskingum increased their lead to 8-2 with a run in the sixth, before the Quaker rally in the bottom of the seventh netted just four runs, as the team ended the game trailing by two at 8-6. Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) was 2-for-4 in the game, while he and Troy Brege (Hanover, PA/Gettysburg) each drove in a pair of runs and Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) scored twice.

With the split, the Quakers go to 14-9 overall and 2-6 in the OAC, while Muskingum goes to 14-15 and 3-9 in conference play.

The next game for the Green and White is today, as the team hosts 17th ranked Denison starting at 4:00 p.m.
