Quakers use pair of big innings to run past Franklin 10-5

WILMINGTON (April 13, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quaker baseball team scored four runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, giving the hosts to 10-5 victory against former HCAC foe Franklin College on Sunday.

Franklin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning before a Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin) two-run home run cut the deficit to one at 3-2. Franklin then scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning, to increase the lead to three, at 5-2. The Quakers then answered back in the sixth inning when the team put four runs across the plate, taking a 6-5 lead. WC added four insurance runs in the eighth inning, giving the team the 10-5 lead.

In the game Evans led the squad batting 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI's while Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains), Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood), Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillboro) and Jerod Theobald (Cleves/LaSalle) each had a pair of hits in the game. Evans crossed the plate three times in the game while Wolverton scored twice in the contest. Jason Berger (Fairfield/Fairfield) picked up his first victory of the season, pitching two-and-two-thirds of an inning, allowing no earned runs and striking out two. Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn) recorded his third save of the season.

The win brings the Quaker's record to 17-6-1 on the year while Franklin goes to 8-16.

The next game for the Green and White is on Tuesday, April 15 when the team travels to New Concord, Ohio to face off against Muskingum College with the first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
