(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) WILMINGTON, Ohio (April 10, 2004) The Wilmington College Quaker baseball lost a pair of baseball games to conference foe Otterbein College on Saturday. The team fell in the first game 3-1 before falling 10-2 in the afternoon finale.

Otterbein did not waste any time getting things started in the first game, as in the top of the first inning, the Quakers fell behind when the Cardinals hit a two-run home run and then scored again on an RBI single, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead. WC starting pitcher Jamison George (Mt. Sterling/Miami Trace) then settled down, allowing just two hits the rest of the way.

The Quakers mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, when Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) hit a solo home run before Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) walked and Troy Brege (Hanover, PA/Gettysburg) singled and Tyler Kelch (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) walked to load the bases for the Quakers. Otterbein starter Adam Brandt settled down and forced a ground-out to end the game, giving the Cardinals the 3-1 victory.

Brandt picked up the win for the Cardinals, pitching the entire seven innings, scattering six hits, while George pitched six and two-thirds of an inning, allowing just the three runs in the first inning, striking out two in the game.

In the second game the Quakers took their first lead of the game when Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) tripled with two outs, and then scored on a wild pitch, giving the hosts the 1-0 lead. The Quakers kept their lead until the third inning when the Cardinals put up three runs, giving the visitors the two-run advantage.

The Cardinals kept their foot on the gas pedal, scoring seven more runs in the next three innings, opening a 10-1 lead. The Quakers got one run back when Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that was all the Quakers were able to put on the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.

Derek Wellington (Chillicothe/Unioto) picked up the loss in the game, pitching four and one-third of an inning and striking out two, while Robert Benjamin, the Otterbein pitcher, went the entire game, striking out three.

With the pair of losses, the Quakers fall to 12-6 on the season and 0-4 in the OAC while Otterbein improves to 14-7 overall and 3-1 in league play.

The next game for the Green and White is on Monday, April 12, as the team travels north to Wittenberg University to face off against the Tigers starting at 7:00.
