Quakers upset #23 Rose-Hulman 6-5

Buehner goes 3-for-5 in win

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE) WILMINGTON, Ohio (April 7, 2004) ­ The Wilmington College Quakers upset 23rd ranked Rose-Hulman on Wednsday afternoon by a 6-5 score.

The game started as a pitchers dual, with neither team being able to score a run over the first five and a half innings. The Quakers got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) singled in Tyler Kelch (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) before scoring on a pair of errors.

The Engineers tied the game up in the top of the sixth with a pair of scores before the Quakers re-took the lead when Greg Krieger (Bellefontaine/Bellefontaine) suicide squeezed in Tom Harter (Westlake/Westlake) giving the hosts a one-run advantage.

Rose-Hulman once again responded, this time with three runs, opening a 5-3 lead, but the Quakers once again showed resiliency, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving them the 6-5 lead, which they kept for the remainder of the game in the one-run victory.

Buehner was 3-for-5 from the plate with a run batted in, while Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) and Troy Brege (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) each picked up two hits. Buehner scored twice to lead the team while he, Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) and Krieger knocked in a run.

Wilmington closer Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn) picked up the win for the Quakers, pitching three innings, scattering two hits and striking out two, improving his record to 4-1 on the season.

With the win, the Quakers improve to 11-4 overall on the year, while Rose-Hulman falls to 22-3.

The next game for the Green and White is on Friday, April 9, when the team hosts Cedarville starting at 3:30 p.m.
