Quakers take double header from Mount St. Joseph

AMELIA (April 2, 2003) -- The Wilmington College Quakers swept a double header against the College of Mt. St. Joseph on Wednesday evening by scores of 16-3 and 7-3.

In the first game the Quakers found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning before the Green and White erupted for 10 runs over the next two innings with six runs in the second and four in the third to take a 10-2 lead. MSJ added another run in the bottom of the third, but that would be all that the hosts would score while WC tacked on six more runs over the next four innings.

Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) batted 3-for-3 while Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood) and Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) each went 3-for-5 and Tom Harter (Westlake/Westlake), Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin), Troy Brege (Gettysburg, PA/Gettysburg) and Everett Gibson (Cincinnati/Northwest) each had a pair of hits. Lawson drove in a season-best five runs while Gibson and Harter each knocked in three. A total of 11 Quakers scored in the game, with Wolverton crossing the plate a team-best three times. Clayton Reynolds (Blanchester/Blanchester) pitched the complete game for the Quakers, scattering five hits while striking out three.

In the second game the Quakers started the game with a pair of runs in the first inning off of an Abbot RBI single. The Lions of MSJ then scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning, and had the bases loaded with no outs when Derek Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe) came in in relief and got out of the inning with no runs scored with a double play and a groundout. The Quakers took that momentum into the top of the fifth inning when the bats came alive and the team scored six runs, giving the team a commanding 7-2 lead. Mount St. Joe's comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning yielded only a single run as the Green and White came out of Cincinnati victorious by a 7-3 score.

The Quakers had four players, Evans, Lawson, Abbott and Joe Rosato (Mason/Mason) each record two hits. Abbott led the squad with a trifecta of RBI's wile Rosato knocked in a pair. Lawson crossed the plate a team-high two times in the game. Wellington picked up the victory in the game, improving his record to 4-0 on the season.

With the pair of victories, the team improves their record to 13-4-1 on the season while MSJ falls to 11-8.

The next game for the Green and White is on Thursday, April 3, 2003 when the team plays host to Temple Baptist College with the first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
