Quakers
split with Heidelberg
WILMINGTON
(March 28, 2003) The Wilmington College Quakers split a double
header with the Heidelberg Student Princes on Friday afternoon,
with the Quakers winning the first 3-2 before dropping the finale
3-1.
The
Quakers and Student Princes traded runs in the first inning before
the two teams pitched goose eggs for the next four-and-a-half innings
before a Chad Abbott (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) home run ended the scoring
slump. The team added an insurance run over the remainder of the
inning, as the team held on to a 3-2 win. Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison
Plains) was two-for-two while the team's other six hits came from
six different batters. Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View), Abbott
and Wolverton each knocked in a run for the victors. Derek Wellington
(Chillicothe/Chillicothe) pitched seven strong innings, allowing
just one earned run while striking out four in the process.
In the second game the Quakers had the Green and White scoring the
game's first run in the third inning before Heidelberg knotted the
game up at one in their half of the fourth inning. The Berg got
a pair of runs in the sixth when Brock Gankosky hit a two-run home
run to give the team a split in the season series. The Quakers managed
just three hits in the game, with Buehner, Abbott and Wolverton
each brought in a hit. Luke Ogden (Peebles/Peebles) pitched all
seven innings, striking out five and allowing just three earned
runs.
The split brings the Quakers' season record to 10-3-1 on the year
and an even 1-1 in conference play while Heidelberg goes to 10-5
and 1-1 in the OAC.
The
next game for the Green and White is slated for March 30 when the
team travels to Northern Kentucky to face off against the Thomas
More Saints with the first pitch set for 1:00 in a double header.
