Press Release) BLUFFTON, Ohio (March 25, 2004) -- The Wilmington
College Quakers' powerful offence once again took center stage,
as the Quakers handily defeated Bluffton 15-7 in a non-conference
game Wednesday afternoon.
The
Quakers struck first in the second inning when the team put up three
runs on a hit batsman, a pair of triples and a single. After the
three-run second the team added four more runs in the third inning,
highlighted by Jamison George's two-run single.
After
giving up three runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Quakers
added the winning runs of the game, three of them, in the fifth
inning as Jimmy Wolverton knocked in a pair of runs with a single
down the left field line.
The
Quakers added two more runs in the sixth before scoring two more
in the eighth and another in the ninth, giving the team their 15-7
victory.
Mike
Kroeger led the way by going 5-of-6 from the plate while Brent Bird
was 4-for-5 and George 3-for-5. Bird scored a game-high four times
in the contest, while George knocked in four runs and Wolverton,
Bird and Kroeger each brought in three.
Derek
Wellington was the pitcher of record for the Quakers, pitching four
innings, scattering five hits and striking out six.
With
the win the Quakers improve to 8-1 on the season, while Bluffton
falls to 4-10.
The
next game for the Green and White is on Sunday, March 28 when the
team travels to Defiance to face off against the Yellow Jackets
starting at 2:00.
