split double header with Wittenberg
WILMINGTON
(March 23, 2003) The Wilmington College Quakers split a double
header with route 68 foe Wittenberg University on Sunday, March
23. The Green and White won the first game by a 12-3 score before
the hosts were defeated 7-5 in the second game of the afternoon.
The Quakers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning in the
first game while they scored a pair of runs in the second and six
more in the fifth.
Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin), Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood)
and Ben Buehner (Germantown/Valley View) each had three hits in
the game while Tom Harter (Westlake/Westlake) and Evans each crossed
the plate a trio of times. Buehner had four runs batted in while
Lawson had three. Derrick Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe) pitched
the complete game for the Green and White, striking out four while
allowing just a pair of earned runs.
In the second contest, the Quakers found themselves down 5-0 going
into the bottom of the third inning, and were never able to close
the gap. The hosts got their first run in the third inning before
scoring three in the fifth to cut the gap to 6-4, and added another
in the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the strong Wittenberg
squad.
Lawson and Brent Bird (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) each had a pair
of hits while Evans, Buehner, Jerod Theobald (Cleves/LaSalle), Jimmy
Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) and Bird each scored a run for
the Quakers. Bird drove in a team-high two runs for the Quakers.
Dusty Mack (Batavia/Glen Este) picked up his first loss of the season,
which drops his record to 2-1 on the year.
The next game for the Green and White is on Wednesday, March 26
when the team travels to Bluffton, Ohio to take on the Beavers of
Bluffton College with the first pitch set for 4:00.
