  Quakers go 3-5 in Florida

FORT MYERS, Fl. - The Wilmington College Quakers opened the season with a 3-5 record at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

The Green and White started the trip with a 6-10 defeat before dropping two games to a very strong Virginia Wesleyan squad by scores of 2-8 and 1-6. The Quakers then swept Eastern Nazerene with 12-6 and 13-5 victories before splitting with Webster (Mo.) 5-6 and 12-11 and dropping the finale against Robert Morris 3-5.

Over the week Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin) led the way for the Quakers hitting .457 (16 for 35) while piling up five doubles. Senior center fielder Alan Ledford (Blanchester/Blanchester) was the main power source for Wilmington as he hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs in the eight games while also batting .444 during that span. Leadoff hitter Josh Martin (Circleville/Circleville) batted .429.

Leading the pitching staff was Luke Ogden (Peebles/Peebles) has he recorded a 1-1 record while striking out 10 in 10 and a third inning pitched. Dusty Mack (Batavia/Glen Este) and John Elsen (Fairfield/Fairfield) recorded the other victories while Scott Kacirek (Avon Lake/St. Edward) posted the team's lone save in the week.

The Quakers next game is Tuesday, March 19 as the team travels to Springfield, Ohio to take on the Wittenberg Tigers.
