  Quakers drop two to Denison

WILMINGTON, Ohio ­ The Quakers of Wilmington College dropped two games to intra-state foe Denison University on Saturday by scores of 9-8 and 3-2.

In the first game of the day, the 9-8 defeat, Denison jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning when leadoff batter Cam Cowden hit a home run to start the game and give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Denison scored another run in the third inning before the Green and White scored their first run of the game when Brent Bird (Hilliard/Hilliard Darby) led off the third inning with a solo home run, cutting the Big Red lead to one at 2-1. Denison the erupted for five runs in the fourth inning, and two more in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning. In the Quakers' at bat in the fifth, the Quakers hit three consecutive doubles with Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood), Al Ledford (Blanchester/Blanchester) and Joe Rosato (Mason/Mason) with each getting an RBI in the process, as the team scored three runs in the inning, cutting the deficit to five at 9-4.

The Quakers put another three-spot on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning Bird hit a one-run double and Martin then plated two more with a double of his own, cutting the Big Red lead to two going into the seventh inning. After a second consecutive scoreless inning for the Green and White, Ledford led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to cut the lead to one. The Quakers were unable to muster any more runs, as the visitors from Granville ended the game on top 9-8.

Bird and Jess Shepherd (Lexington, KY/Lexington Catholic) each batted two-for-three from the plate while Martin, Lawson and Ledford each hit two-for-four. Martin, Ledford and Bird each knocked in two runs while Ledford and Bird scored twice in the game. John Elsen (Fairfield/Fairfield) picked up the loss for the Green and White, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs.

In the afternoon finale, the Quakers faced off against strong pitcher Ryan Hite, who allowed just one hit in the contest. The Quakers got on the board first in the game as Rosato reached on an error by the third baseman with Jerod Theobald (Cleves/LaSalle) also reached base with an error by the third baseman as Rosato advanced to third. After a flyout, Bird walked with the final ball getting past the catcher, scoring Rosato. After a solo home run by Denison in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one, Evans came to the plate in the bottom of the third and started the inning off with a home run, the only hit allowed by Hite in the game. The Quakers kept their one-run lead until the top of the fifth inning when the visitors scored two runs off of a two-run double. After a scoreless fifth inning, the game was called due to rain, giving the Big Red the 3-2 victory in five innings.

In the last game of the afternoon, Evans was the only Quaker batter to record a hit, with his third inning solo home run. Ryan Roush (Hamersville/Western Brown) picked up the loss for the Green and White, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing just the three runs in the game.

The next game for the Green and White is set for Sunday, April 28, 2002 as the team travels to Urbana, Ohio to take on the Urbana Knights. .
