WILMINGTON, Ohio - The Wilmington
College Quaker baseball team won their
tenth game of the season, beating the
Tigers of Georgetown College (15-18),
in the second game of a double header.
The victory keeps the Quakers above .500
at 10-9 overall on the year.
The Quakers struggled in
the first game, as the visiting Tigers
took off to a 2-0 lead after their half
of the first inning. Wilmington closed
the gap to one in their half of the first
inning when Josh Ritter (Cincinnati/Purcell
Marian) knocked in Justin Evans
(Franklin/Franklin) with a fielders
choice. Georgetown then scored another
run in the second inning before the Quakers
countered with a run of their own when
Josh Martin (Circleville/Circleville)
brought home Joe Rosato (Mason/Mason)
with a base hit. Georgetown then erupted
for five runs in each of the next two
innings to take off with a 13-2 lead after
four innings. The Quakers scored a run
in the sixth and seventh inning, but it
was too little, too late as the Quakers
ended the game trailing by 12 at 16-4.
In the opening contest,
the hosts were led by Rosato who batted
three-for-three while Evans hit three-for-four.
Ritter knocked in a team high two runs
while four different Quakers passed the
plate.
In the afternoon finale,
Wilmington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in
the first inning when Evans hit a solo
home run. The game remained scoreless
until the third inning when the Tigers
tied the game at one. In the fourth inning,
the Quakers bats came alive as they scored
three runs, two of which came from an
Evans double. The Green and White then
tacked on four insurance runs in the fifth
inning to give the game its 8-2 final
score.
In the second contest the
hosts were led by Evans, as he batted
three-for-four for the second game in
a row. Martin batted two-for-three as
Everett Gibson (Cincinnati/Northwest)
scored two runs in the win. John Elsen
(Fairfield/Fairfield) picked up the
win for the Green and White as he pitched
the complete game victory, striking out
five in the process.
With the wins, the team
improves to 10-9 on the year with their
next game set for Tuesday, April 9 as
the team takes on the Earlham Quakers
in the Baseball Quaker Bowl in the friendly
confines of Tewksbury-Delany Field.
