WILMINGTON, Ohio The Wilmington College
Quakers split a double header with conference
foe John Carroll University on Saturday
afternoon. The Green and White won the
first game 4-0 and were then defeated
9-1 in the afternoon finale.
In the first game, the
Quakers used strong pitching by freshman
Derrick Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe)
who pitched the complete game shutout
while striking out seven. The Quakers
scored all of their runs in the first
two innings when Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin)
knocked in Josh Martin (Circleville/Circleville)
in the first inning. The Quakers got their
runs in the second inning when Joe
Rosato (Mason/Mason) hit a bases loaded
single, Martin got a bases loaded walk
and Evans hit into a fielders choice scoring
a run in the second inning.
Evans led the team on the
afternoon in going two-for-three with
two RBI's. Seven other Quaker batters
got a hit. Wellington was the pitching
star, allowing just three hits and walking
only one in seven innings.
In the second contest,
John Carroll's bats came alive as they
scored two runs in each of the first two
innings before scoring one in the third
and then two more in the fourth. The Quakers
got their solitary run in their half of
the first inning when Evans hit a solo
home run. The Blue Streaks added two more
runs in the seventh inning to give the
game its 9-1 count.
In the second game the
Quakers managed only four hits as Evans,
Al Ledford (Blanchester/Blanchester),
Brent Bird (Hilliard/Hilliard Darby)
and Josh Ritter (Cincinnati/Purcell
Marian) recorded the hits. Evans had
the team's only RBI and run with his solo
shot over the wall. Burt Cox (Fairborn/Fairborn)
picked up the loss for the Green and White
as he pitched three and two-thirds inning,
giving up seven runs, only three earned
while striking out two.
With the split, the Quakers
go to 9-8 on the year while John Carroll
goes to 5-10-1 on the season. The next
game for the Green and White is Sunday,
April 7 as they take on Georgetown College
in the friendly confines of Tewksbury-Delany
Field at 1:00.
