WILMINGTON, Ohio The Wilmington College
Quakers ran into a buzzsaw on Saturday
afternoon, as the Pioneers of Marietta
came in to Wilmington and ran over the
Green and White in town games of a double
header. Marietta came out on top in the
first game 12-1 and then scored 12 more
in the second game in their 12-3 win.
In the first game, the
Quakers got down early, as Marietta scored
four runs in the top of the first inning,
highlighted by a home run by Jay Coakley
the sailed over the center field wall.
The Pioneers scored two more in the second
and one in the fourth before the Quakers
could get on the board when Brent Bird
(Hilliard/Hilliard Darby) knocked
in Aaron Lawson (Hebron/Lakewood).
Marietta would tack on three more in the
fifth and two more in the seventh to end
the game with its 12-1 score.
The Quakers were held to
just four hits by pitcher Trey Lamb (3-0)
who struck out six in five innings of
work. Luke Ogden (Peebles/Peebles)
picked up the loss for the Quakers pitching
four innings and striking out two.
In the second game of the
twin bill, Marietta scored four runs in
the first inning before the Quakers fought
back in their half of the inning when
Al Ledford (Blanchester/Blanchester)
hit a home run over the right field fence
cutting the lead to three at 4-1. The
Pioneers scored two more in the second
before the Quakers cut the lead to three
at 6-3 as the team put two runs across
the board in the fourth inning. The comeback
was not enough however as Marietta scored
two more in the fifth and four more to
finish the game in the seventh.
The Quakers managed three
runs in the game on just three hits, two
of which came from Ledford who was a perfect
2-for-2 in the game. Derrick Wellington
(Chillicothe/Chillicothe) picked up
the loss for the Green and White in pitching
6.2 innings.
The losses drop the Quakers
season record to 7-7 with their next game
set for Tuesday, April 2 against Temple
Baptist.
