Long-time English Prof Recognized as 'Friend of Education'
Gloria Flaherty Honored
August 20, 2007
As an advocate for children’s literature, Gloria has organized five Wilmington College Children’s Literature Conferences. Teachers don’t just come to this conference to gain CEUs and take ideas back to put in a file. This conference reaches into the schools. Students become active participants reading the work of featured authors, thinking about the literature, and writing to earn a day with an author.
Gloria’s commitment to education is unrivaled. She is an advocate of multi-cultural education and literature. She has served as a best of round reader for the 7th and 8th grade interscholastic writing competition Power of the Pen. She taught for many years at the Warren Correctional Institution. And she has worked hand-in-hand with literacy programs in the community such as Harvest of Gold and with teachers in the local schools to develop reading programs.
