I found this quote today and just can't seem to keep it to myself. There are so many situations in my life right now that I can apply this to. I would like to keep this perspective when things start to get tough. We just have to start looking at them in a different light.
For the month of April, a few friends and I are setting little weekly goals for self-betterment. We all need support and enouragement from time to time. Its part of a healthy lifestyle. Whether you find inspriation in a church, a book, a classroom, a walk around the campus Bell Tower, or listening to music - use the inspiration to fuel a new task or complete an old one. This quote was my inspiration for the day and now it will be my mantra for the whole month of April! Stay Strong completing this last month of class!

This semester is flying by. My internship at Drayer Physical Therapy is going well and I am still enjoying working at Jen’s Deli during lunch hours. My classes are getting tougher as I get deeper and deeper into course material. Although these classes are getting a bit more difficult I am really enjoying learning material that will be useful to me in my future career.
My physiology class with Don Troike has especially peaked my interest. He gives detailed explanations of body functions from first hand experiences to help us understand complex concepts. General Medical Conditions with Linda Tecklenberg is probably my most challenging course. The tests often include essays which require recalling and incorporating info from numerous sources into an educated answer. That means I really have to keep up on the reading she gives, and remembering it all! My kinesiology class with Kim Isaac is basically “just” memorizing all of the body’s muscles’ locations, functions, and innervations. These can definitely get confusing with so many similar muscle names and common functions. Although I have about 50 muscles to memorize for her class, my memorizing doesn’t stop there! For Evaluation of the Lower Extremities I must learn the ligaments, muscles, bones and common injuries of the ankle. I wish I could say “I will be an expert in no time,” but learning this requires patience, repetition, one more year of undergraduate study, plus three years of graduate school. Whohooo for lots of learning!

For those of you contemplating a healthier lifestyle, but don’t know where to start…check out Student Health 101! Student Health 101 is a website geared towards college students and the young adult lifestyle. THe site has a section specifically tailored to the needs of the Wilmington College community. In addition, the home page has a button you can click for upcoming health based activities on campus. This relatively new addition to Wilmington College Health and Wellness Promotions has some really great tips. Videos, articles, and quizzes are the media SH101 uses to engage your brain.
Although you may not want to wait for the videos to load, I would like to say that they are very beneficial (hopefully with the new Internet upgrade the college is receiving over spring break, these videos will be much more easily accessible) ! I recently watched few on the most recent addition of Student Health 101. The videos ranged from disordered eating to chocolate avocado mousse to group meeting pointers. If you still are too impatient to wait for a video to load they also have some great articles for a quick, educational read.
Hopefully, Student Health 101 will inspire you to get active and maybe make one or two small changes to your life.

Being RA is still going well, and I am getting more involved with different aspects of my Exercise Science major. Lately I've been really interested in the nutrition aspect and mental health.
While procrastinating homework (not recommended), I came across an article with some good tips for making little self-imrovements. This article is not a college endorsed or funded site, but here is the link http://kriscarr.com/blog/crazy-sexy-gentle-how-to-cleanse-in-2013/. It's mainly a health and wellness blog for women, but any gentleman reading this would likely benefit as well.
I definitely agree with the article that little life changes are easier to integrate than extreme changes. For example, let's say one of you goals is to cut down on sugar intake, but you never feel like working towards your goal because you feel it might be an all-or-none deal. This should not be the case. Instead of saying to yourself I can never have cookies or pop again, think to yourself "I can have a cookie or a soda, just not 5 cookies or sodas. Just cut down on one cookie or one soda a day. Some effort is better than no effort! Or if you are open to switching foods, grab a piece of fruit instead of a cookie. Or even two pieces of fruit. (You might grab two or three cookies, or have two or three cokes, why not have a few pieces of fruit instead? In fact, you'll eat less because the fiber in the fruit will fill you up sooner and you won't have to eat as much. Plus it's natural sugar, not high fructose corn syrup).
It's still the beginning of 2013 - it is not too late to start a "New Year's" resolution!

The first week of classes prompted me to get organized and start working hard once again. With 18 credit hours including an internship, a couple part-time jobs, spinning classes and RA duties, I realized I will have to be an expert time manager this semester. Thankfully, over break I was able to buy myself a laptop! This is helping me organize my to-do lists, keep readable class notes and an updated calendar of assignments due. I definitely recommend keeping a planner, either electronically or old-school journal style to help you keep things under control as you start the New Year.
Don’t forget to work in some personal time as well! Taking an 15 minutes to an hour a day exercise, watch a show, paint your nails, or play a video game can allow yourself to de-stress, collect your thoughts, and remind yourself that you are human! You can only do so much in one day. Realize that hectic schedules can take a toll on your mind and body so be sure to listen to your body’s signals.

Wilmington College’s efforts to make a typically unmemorable holiday something memorable were a success. The program on Monday, January 21st began by interesting the public with an intriguing title “Birthday of a Holiday: The Man or the Mission.” This venue reminded students and community members of how far the United States come in terms of social justice. Song, mime, poetry, and rhythm engaged the audience’s imagination and senses, while speakers engaged their minds.
The community spokesman Marque Jones reminded us that a mere fifty years ago segregation was still part of society and around one hundred and fifty years ago, slavery was still legal in the United States. While Jones reminded listeners of the past, Wilmington’s Mayor Randy Riley highlighted accomplishments of the 21st century. Mayor Riley felt so moved by the dedication to social justice by Dr. Martin Luther King, and along with the encouragement of former Professor Neil Snarr, that Riley proclaimed Elm Street to be also known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Way (for those of you not so familiar with Wilmington street names, Elm Street is the street that Herman Court is on). Martin Luther King, Jr. ‘s holiday and birthday have given new meaning and memories for the students, staff and community of Wilmington.

yes, that is snow outside my window

For the past five weeks, I have been completing a one credit hour honors seminar titled “Global Climate Change”. In the Honors Program at Wilmington College, we are required to complete four of these courses, one each semester during sophomore and junior years. The topics are varied and interesting, and the workload is light. However, they give us additional knowledge of material that we would not normally learn in a traditional class, but information that is useful to know in today’s changing world. The two previous courses I took were “Mediation Training”, where we learned how to peacefully resolve conflict, and “Lifeboat 101”, where we learned about the dangers of exponential population growth. Next semester I will be taking a class about community building and staying local.
The reason I thought of this topic first thing in the morning is that I woke up to the ground covered in a dusting of snow and 30mph winds. Having a hurricane this late in the year is unusual, and climate change could be a factor. Who knows if the changes are natural or human caused (because the changes cannot be denied, no matter what data you look at or what your political views are; its concrete scientific data). I hope someday in the future we will know for sure, and everyone will do their part to help stop the rapid change.

Me, working at Joe's

Friday night was my first night working by myself at Joe’s Java, a coffee shop within Sugartree Ministries, the local food pantry. They offer a full service coffee bar to help raise money to buy food for the ministry, and I am the new volunteer barista on Friday nights. It is a 10-minute walk from campus and will soon be open Monday-Saturday until 10 or 11pm. Joe’s is a great place to hang out, even if you aren’t into coffee. This past Friday there were around 15 students there and I hope to recruit more within the next few weeks. I only learned how to make specialty coffee drinks a couple weeks ago, but it is something that I already enjoy a lot. I like interacting with people (especially interesting people), and interesting people seem to flock to coffee shops of any kind. I was there hour hours Friday and it seemed to go very quickly. If you are a current student or faculty member, come get coffee from me next Friday! If you are a prospective student, come get coffee from me on Friday and I will tell you everything you need to know about Wilmington! It will be a great time. If you are into service and being somewhere with positive, giving spirit, Sugartree Ministries is the place to be. I’m sure I will talk much more about it in the future.
