This Thursday was a busy day for me, but in a fun way! The morning started out with the usual class, but the afternoon was all about fun (which really is ok once in a while). After lunch, I started out with a 31 mile bike ride throughout the countryside surrounding town. After I got back, I left to go play laser tag with all of the resident assistants. We went to Lazer Kraze, which is very close to Kings Island. Laser tag is always fun, no matter how old you are! On the way back, I ate Chipotle and if you have read any of my previous blogs, you would know that I am obsessed with Chipotle. When I got back, we had a charity table tennis tournament on campus. Unexpectedly, a very good former national tournament participant was at out tournament. Unfortunately, he destroyed me in final round to win the golden paddle. However, I will get to train with him over the summer so hopefully my skills will drastically improve this summer. I’m really looking forward to everything this summer has to offer!

Upcoming weeks

Today, I have my first big exam for my rehab class. I’ve been preparing for it basically since the first day of class and I’m nervous! It starts in about an hour from now, but I need a break from studying. Hopefully it’s not as hard as I’m thinking it will be!

I am thinking the end of this week will be a little more relaxing. Over the past week, the Wilmington College Table Tennis club has received a few exciting shipments. We now have court dividers, scoreboards, new rackets and balls, and a new table (that still needs to be put together). On March 3, a few of us will be traveling to Columbus for the Arnold Table Tennis Tournament, which is held at the Columbus Convention Center. We went to a tournament last semester and it was a lot of fun, and this tournament is part of a much larger fitness expo, so some of the areas best athletes will be there. Hopefully I find some time soon to work on my table tennis game! Athletic Training keeps me very busy, but that’s what I am here for.

In my last blog, I talked about a table tennis tournament that the Table Tennis club would be traveling to. After playing in the tournament, I can’t wait to go back to another one! Although we didn’t get to officially compete, we got our ratings (which hopefully will be going up soon) and met some great people. We also got to watch some professionals play, which is incredible to see; Imagine sitting courtside at a professional tennis match, but on a slightly smaller scale. The club should be traveling to another tournament in Columbus, and Josh and I will get to advance in the competition!

In Athletic training news, today is the day that I start my new rotation at Dayton Sports Medicine Institute (DSMI). From my experiences so far, getting to observe of campus gives you multiple perspectives on the medical world and allows you to see how everything medically is interconnected. It also allows you get out of the routine of the Wilmington College Athletic Training Room and see how things are done at other institutions. I have heard that DSMI has a very nice facility, so I am looking forward to working there for the next two weeks!

Chiropractor and Table Tennis

October 16, 2011

For the next two weeks, I’ll be observing Dr. Stromberg, a chiropractor who practices right across from campus and is a huge Wilmington College promoter. I spent my first two days there on Monday an Tuesday, and it was really neat! I don’t want to be a chiropractor, but I feel like I learned a lot of useful information by observing there. In the athletic training program here, we take Head, Neck, and Spine Evaluation our junior year. Learning some information about the spine before hand will only give me an advantage in the class. Yesterday, I learned some basics about reading x-rays of the spine and what to look for when there is a spine issue. I obviously have a lot to learn, but I still got to learn some basics that I did not learn in class!

On another topic unrelated to athletic training, I will be playing in my first table tennis tournament this weekend! Josh Kincaid, a junior here, recently started an official Table Tennis club on campus, and we will be traveling to Indiana to participate in an official USA Table Tennis tournament, where we will receive our rankings after playing round robin style and will be able to compete in tournaments in the future! Its an exciting thing for me since I don’t play any sports any more and it will be an opportunity to watch some very good players and possibly improve my game some.
