Music and school life

Over the next few weeks, I will be listening to Grimes’ new album entitled “Visions”. The album just came out the past week, and I am very impressed after a couple listens. Grimes is the stage name of Montreal based Claire Boucher, and she describes the latest album as “post-internet”. Whatever this means to you, her music is heavily influenced from electronic sounds she has heard growing up. There are layers, loops, and catchy rhythms with human-emotion based lyrics. I still have a lot to listen for, but so far this album is great!

In the Wilmington College Athletic Training world, the new week brings another rotation switch for the sophomores and juniors in the program. Next month, I will be with the Baseball team. I have never worked with baseball, so it should be a good experience! The week after next will be spring break, and I couldn’t be more excited. I never understood what a break really meant until this year, but I will fully embrace nine days without class. My schedule is very difficult this semester, with 14 credit hours of athletic training classes, but I guess I can’t expect it to get any easier in the future. I hope I can adjust soon!

One advantage of living in Wilmington and going to college here is that you get to experience everything that the town has to offer during the holiday season. Many of these events take place during breaks and most students do not get to see them. However if possible, I would recommend all of them. Last night was the first event of the season, the Hometown HoliDazzle parade. This is a relatively new event, but it is now a tradition in which all of the streets in the downtown area are closed off for an afternoon festival with a parade following. For the past 5 years, it has been a tradition to start off the holiday season the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The parade even ends with Santa arriving!

While the break from school was enjoyable, it’s time for me to get back to work. We have one more week of class and a week of final exams (which I still have a considerable amount of studying to do for), then a month off for winter break! While I enjoy being at school, a break will be nice. But after a couple weeks away from campus, I will be ready for classes to start again.

Almost Break Time

Saying goodbye to nice weather for the year

This part of the fall semester is the hardest part of the year for me. During the spring, there is a week break right in the middle of the semester, which evenly breaks up the semester. In the fall, we don’t get a substantial break until thanksgiving. This can be especially difficult when you have a heavy class load. However, the break is almost a reality! It will be nice to get to go home and spend some time with family and friends, while only halfway studying for finals, which are quickly approaching. Thanksgiving is usually the time a stop wishing it was warm outside and accepting that winter is almost here.

During my Athletic Training hours this month, I have been with the indoor track team. They are usually fairly low maintenance and injury free, so we have been discussing and reviewing various subjects at practices. Although I am learning a lot that I have not learned in class, it will be very helpful once I have taken all of the classes and practice time will be good for reviewing. The best way to learn is through discussion and practical application, things that cannot be learned as easily in the classroom. Next semester (spring of sophomore year) is when the workload really picks up and we learn a lot of the information we will be using on a daily basis. I’ll be looking forward to knowing how to do injury evaluations and making rehab programs!
