All business - before lobbying
Contributed by Brad Fuller
This past weekend, I spent four days in Washington, DC for Friends Committee on National Legislation’s (FCNL) spring lobby weekend. FCNL is a Quaker Lobby for the public interest on Capitol Hill. They are a nonpartisan organization that seeks a world free of war or the threat of war, free of discrimination, a reduced carbon emitting earth, and they were the first non-Native American group on Capitol Hill to lobby in favor of Native American rights. This year, our lobby topic concerned energy and the environment. For two days, we learned all about the topic and on Tuesday, we went to our senators and house members offices and gave them our opinion! We were then informed by their staffers how each member is working on the issues we presented. We specifically learned a lot about the clean energy bill that Rob Portman has proposed in the past, why it failed, what they are doing to fix it, and how it should succeed in the future. We also had the opportunity to meet Senator Sherrod Brown, and he spoke to us on the steps of the Capitol Building! On top of the educational part of the trip, there was plenty of time for exploring DC and eating at some great restaurants (including Busboys and Poets, the best rated vegan restaurant in DC of 2012!)
