Cross country race begins day full of alumni activities

Soccer games cap off alumni games on WC campus

August 25, 2007

Past and present Wilmington College cross country athletes ran beneath a kind cloud cover Saturday in the annual Alumni Race on the WC course. The event kicked off a series of alumni events that included men and women's soccer games at Charlie Gilhart Field.

The male cross country runners broke from their pre-race huddle with the cheer "old dudes!" The women's cheer was a bit more colorful, and the race was on.

Many of the runners from yesteryear easily traversed the course. Others, however, were reaching for imaginary knives that had become real pains in the side.

"It's nice to have these people back on campus," Wilmington head coach Ron Combs said. "Their commitment to the college and the cross country program means the world to me, and I know our current student-athletes appreciate the support they receive from the alumni."

The cross country season begins for real Sept. 1 when the Quakers compete in the Franklin (Ind.) Invitational.
