Watson Library provides library and media services to the widest possible community of seekers and learners. Watson Library's primary responsibility is to support the Mission of Wilmington College by providing relevant resources and services to the students, faculty and staff of Wilmington College. The Library acquires and organizes collections of materials in a variety of formats to support the college curricula and respond to informational needs, by providing assistance in the selection, evaluation, use, and presentation of resources, and by facilitating access to information not held in the library.

CURRICULUM LAB RESOURCES

1. ONLINE GUIDES FOR CURRICULUM/EDUCATION RESEARCH

2. IN-HOUSE TEACHER EDUCATION RESOURCES AND SERVICES

The Curriculum Lab collections for education majors include both audio-visual and print materials. Locted in the Media Center, Curr Lab audio-visual resources are integrated with other holdings and include grade-level appropriate films and music, including many titles related to classic children's works. Located just behind the Juvenile book collection, the print Curr Lab contains text-books, student workbooks, teacher editions (not more than 10 years old), etc. that support the instruction of future classroom teachers in grades K through 12. Some specific subject areas include Art, Multi-Cultural Perspectives, Diversity Issues, and Language Arts. Resources to support subject specialists are located appropriately within the Main collection. Curriculum resources related to peace education and conflict management are located in the Peace Resource Center (PRC) collection, listed in the Watson/OPAL catalog. Print materials must be checked out at the Circulation Desk or the PRC and circulate for three weeks. Currently all testing materials are held by the Education Department. Consult the OPAL online catalog for specific holdings and loan status. Additional materials are available through OhioLINK.

SERIALS READING ROOM -- Journals, Periodicals, Magazines, Newspapers

--A variety of current newspapers and magazine subscriptions - selective backfiles.
--200 print-format periodical titles, with print or microform archives. Plus- Thousands of periodical titles with most subscriptions available only through the Watson/OhioLINK online databases.

All in-house periodical holdings in all formats are for use only in the library and do not circulate. Watson Library also hosts a distribution rack for newspapers provided free to students as part of a Student Life program.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS

FDLSThe library qualified in 1986 as an official depository for free government publications coming from various government agencies and departments. The library currently selects 12 percent of all government publications that are offered. The selected items come in different formats: paper sheets, books, pamphlets, maps, posters, and microfiche. As of December, 2005, almost all federal government documents were made available on the Internet with selected direct links provided in the OPAL and OhioLINK catalogs.

During weekends or late evenings, check at the Library Circulation Desk for Course-Required Reserved Videos. These may be viewed in-house in Student Lounge or on Upper Level.

Reservations for equipment support are required at least 2 working days in advance of event.

Students enrolled in Summer Session courses who need to conduct library research or consult a librarian after 5 p.m. are encouraged to telephone the Library at Ext. 345. A librarian may be able to meet your research needs by telephone, online, or by special evening appointment. A group of students may make a group appointment. Also, please let us know if you need to pick up books on hold during the evening, Ext. 345. Special arrangements may be possible.

Circulating Items / Loan Periods

Circulation loan periods are three weeks for books and circulating government documents, with renewals permitted if no holds have been placed on items. Materials may be renewed online. Overdue fines are 50 cents per day per item. Reserved items and other types of loans have various loan periods -- please verify at time of loan.

Reserve Materials

Materials on course reserve are kept at the circulation desk. Reserve periods may be 2-hour closed reserve, overnight reserve, or longer (at the discretion of faculty). Overdue fines are 50 cents per hour for late reserve items.

Inter-Library Loans

Borrowing materials and obtaining photocopies from other libraries is a privilege limited to students, faculty and staff of Wilmington College. If Wilmington does not own the journal article or book you want, or if our copy is checked out, you still have options, described below.

BOOKS, VIDEOS, CDs: You may be able to locate and then request needed books, videos, or music CDs from OPAL or OhioLINK. Remember that OPAL and OhioLINK are not intended to provide your textbooks; only occasionally will a student be able to borrow an "available" copy of a required course textbook, which may be recalled at any time to serve another borrower.  When requesting a book from OPAL or OhioLINK catalogs, you will be prompted for your name and barcode.

Your "barcode number" is your Wilmington College ID number plus enough leading zeros to make 9 digits. (You will not actually have a barcode label on your ID card). If your ID number is 111111, your barcode number will be, 000111111). Your WC ID number is contained magnetically on your ID card, appears on your course schedule, and on your student account statement. If you do not have it, check with the Registrar.  Your library account is activated a few days prior to the beginning of each semester or summer term for which you are registered and continues to be active through the end of that term. 

You will also be asked to select a pickup location. This is very important. The book will not be sent here if you do not select the appropriate Wilmington pickup location. You may choose to pickup your requested OPAL or OhioLINK items from another more convenient member library. The book will be sent to the pickup location in 3 or 4 days. You can check it out from the circulation desk for 3 weeks. Items delivered to Cincinnati Blue Ash WC branch campus will already be checked out to the requesting person.

You can renew a borrowed book unless someone else has placed a hold on it by using OPAL's "My Account." The library's computer system will not allow renewals on items with holds or on items already overdue. Overdue fines are 50 cents per day per overdue item.

ARTICLES and BOOKS: Don't give up! If the article you need is not in Watson Library or online or a needed book seems nowhere to be found, then you should consider our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services (operated by Joni Streber, the manager of Public Services including Circulation Services, Circulation Desk, x345). ILL uses other location and access strategies and may take a couple of weeks for delivery if your item can be located. This ILL service is available only to Wilmington/OPAL borrowers with a campus ID.

Courtesy Cards

Community patrons may apply for a courtesy card. A picture ID is required to apply. Courtesy cardholders may check out 4 local books at a time. Cards are good for 6 months and may be renewed.

Computer Terminals and Internet Policy

The terminals on the first floor of Watson Library are primarily for reference and research use.

  • Internet Policy

The primary mission of the Watson Library is to provide research materials to the students of Wilmington College in support of the classroom curriculum. Its secondary mission is the provision of non-restricted resources to the local community, as well as visiting scholars and students. Thus Community Borrower status is available to those 18 years and older. Internet usage is restricted to Wilmington College students, faculty, and staff, and those who have successfully registered at the Library Circulation Desk for Community Borrower status.

Community students under the age of 18 may use the Internet for research purposes if:

  • accompanied by a parent or
  • having successfully registered for short-term research permission at the Circulation Desk.

The Watson Library exists for educational, not recreational purposes, thereby distinguishing itself as an Academic Library rather than a Public Library. Nevertheless, Watson does provide a current Recreational Reading collection for leisure reading.

When all computer lab stations are in use, Watson Library reassigns computers based on highest priority to academic research purposes by campus users. Those pursuing recreational purposes may be asked to log off so that researchers may use the computers. Community patrons wishing to obtain Internet access for such recreational uses are directed to the Wilmington Public Library.
