The academic progress of all students at Wilmington College is reviewed at the conclusion of each semester in order to determine the academic standing of each student. Good standing is determined by the following criteria:
a) The student must average 12 credit hours with passing grades of D or better during full-time semesters enrolled at Wilmington College. (However, credits earned during summer session count toward good standing even if the student is taking less than 12 credit hours)
and
b) The student must have a minimum cumulative GPA of:
1.60 for freshmen
1.80 for sophomores
2.00 for juniors and seniors
Students who are enrolled regularly on a part-time basis will be considered in good standing if they pass courses for which they receive recorded grades on the following basis:
Students on academic probation are ineligible for intercollegiate athletic competition. Wilmington College abides by NCAA, Division III rules and regulations.
When students are unable to attend class, they should notify the Nurse or the Office of Academic Affairs. In the event that a student misses the equivalent of an entire week of classes without appropriate notification, faculty will alert the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The Associate Dean meets weekly with representatives from Athletics, Admission, Multicultural Affairs, Student Financial Services, Skills Center and Student Services to discuss the student's status. The Associate Dean will communicate with students who are consistently absent from classes without an excuse to discuss a course of action such as getting help from the Skills Center or meeting with their academic advisor. A second occurrence of a weeklong absence from all classes without notification to the Office of Academic Affairs will result in a discussion and possible implementation of an immediate administrative withdrawal from the College and, as it applies, residence hall.
Students who do not maintain good standing will be placed on academic probation for the following semester. They may be required by the Academic Standards and Appeals Committee to take IDS 109, Effective College Study Strategies, in their probationary semester. Students who meet the criteria for good standing at the conclusion of any semester will return to academic good standing, Students on academic probation are ineligible for intercollegiate athletic competition and may be ineligible for other extra-curricular activities as well.
Students who do not meet the requirements to regain good standing at the conclusion of a semester on academic probation will be subject to academic suspension. In addition, any student whose semester GPA falls below a 1.00 will be subject to immediate suspension. Students subject to academic suspension or dismissal may make a written appeal to the Academic Standards and Appeals Committee. If the Committee views the appeal favorably, the student will be allowed to remain on academic probation for an additional semester. Students should consult with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs about this appeal process.
After academic suspension, a student must remain out of Wilmington College for a minimum of six (6) months before reapplying for admission. During this time the student is encouraged to re-examine educational and career goals. Readmission is not automatic and depends on the student's circumstances. If readmission is granted, the student will be readmitted on probation. Readmission is not possible after dismissal from Wilmington College except under provision of the Fresh Start Program.
